Tree Spirit Wisdom From a Loving Dogwood Tree
Dogwood trees represent protection, healing and transformation. Dogwoods bloom between mid-April and mid-May in harsh conditions here in the Pacific Northwest. There is a beautiful wise dogwood tree on the property that has been around as long as I can remember. She bloomed mid-April and her color was so vibrant it’s hard to ignore.
I was taking my usual walk around the property to move my legs and she called me over as I noticed her branches were no longer filled with the bright pink blooms. Before I walked over to her, she told me to grab a jar to collect the fallen petals for a future ceremony.
With the jar in hand, I walked up to her and thanked her for the beauty she brings to the land. As soon as I touched the bark her energy was warm, loving and nurturing. When I touched the moss, within seconds the energy was flowing through my body and I was channeling a message from the tree spirit:
"I remember watching you grow up throughout the years. Running around the property. Standing on the deck laughing and playing with your cousins. Thank you for being here. Thank you for bringing your energy back to the land. I've missed you, we've all missed you."
I had an overwhelming feeling of love and gratitude to the point of wanting to cry. The simple act of placing my hand on her allowed me to connect with her and receive her healing energy and wisdom for the first time. I stood there with tears filling my eyes and a deep sense of gratitude for a message I didn’t know I needed.
As the sun was setting, my guides were urging me to get outside and connect with the dogwood to soak up her healing properties and collect more petals. This time I was called to grab a bigger jar and as I approached her, I thanked her again for her energy and for the message she passed along. I began talking to her and told her I could feel this massive transformation happening and there are parts of myself that I am shedding. As tears rolled down my cheeks, I continued to share with her that I’ve been working towards something for the last 5 years and I haven’t told anyone because I know I have to do this on my own without the opinions and judgments of others. I knew that no one would understand what I’m doing until “I’m successful” at this project I am creating from my Soul. I have to admit, it was the first time I experienced this type of tree spirit wisdom. To be clear, I've hugged and sat beneath a lot of trees, but this was so different and so magikal. I instantly felt this deep connection with her. Such a different energy from the surrounding pine trees.
For most of my life, I have lacked wise, loving and compassionate female energy. And I’m not at all surprised this dogwood tree, that has been on the property for as long as I can remember, is providing me with this motherly energy. I see it as a sign that nature holds so much wisdom if we are open to listening and receiving the messages.
I went about my day and being the Virgo Sun that I am was called to learn more about this magikal tree. Many ancient cultures have some type of folklore about the Dogwood tree with intersecting stories of creation and transformation; inner strength, resilience, and renewal, protection and enhancing spiritual evolution. I received a message that I need to write about this because there are more and more Souls who are awakening to their own gifts and the magik that surrounds them. Take what resonates, leave what doesn’t.
Various cultures throughout history have highly valued and venerated the dogwood tree’s mystical properties possessing a beauty holding a special place in metaphysics and the realm of magik. The dogwood tree is associated with healing, transformation and protection. Promoting emotional well-being, enhancing spiritual evolution and warding off negative energies through its dynamic blooms and graceful branches. Those who practice magik include dogwood in spells and rituals to utilize these powerful energies to manifest their intentions.
The dogwood blooms mid-April to mid-May in harsh conditions. Signaling new life that spring brings after the death of winter symbolizing inner strength, resilience and renewal. Serving as a reminder that there is beauty all around no matter the conditions. Those who choose to work with dogwood can work with these qualities cultivating growth and empowerment within.
Throughout Indigenous folklore, there are stories associating the dogwood tree with creation and transformation, while some believed that the tree symbolized beauty and life and others thought the tree brought healing properties.
Celtic traditions often cherished the dogwood for protection from evil spirits and negative energies and were planted near their homes.
And throughout Christian myths, it was said that the wood used for the crucifix of Jesus Christ was made of dogwood and was cursed to never grow tall and robust. Even though dogwoods do not grow in Palestine.
Dogwood trees are believed to create a protective shield promoting a sense of safety and security against malicious beings and negative energies. It is also known for its physical and emotional healing properties. Herbal remedies are often created using the blossoms and bark to promote balance and harmony in one’s overall well-being.
Metaphysically, dogwood has been known to enhance one’s intuitive gifts within by developing a deeper connection to one’s Soul and the Universe when using dogwood in their spiritual practices, rituals and ceremonies.
The dogwood tree assists in deepening one's connection with nature and elemental energies by helping establish a peaceful relationship that will bring a sense of balance as one evolves through self-inquiry by transcending limiting beliefs allowing expansion of consciousness.
I continue to be in awe of this place I get to call home. The magik of nature - the trees, the flowers, the soil, the animals, the birds. Everything. And they are showing me that everything is right on time. Nothing to rush because I am perfect in this moment just the way I am.
